Heat Stress Warnings and Precautions

  • Temperatures above 90º can cause heat stress, which can be fatal; at these temperatures, a fan without air conditioning will increase heat stress rather than reduce it.
  • High humidity increases the risk of heat stress.
  • Drink plenty of water; avoid alcohol and caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate) which increase fluid loss.
  • Plan strenuous outdoor activities for early or very late in the day to avoid the hottest hours; take frequent breaks when working outdoors.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned environment as much as possible; visit a shopping mall or other public area if you do not have an air conditioner.
  • Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors (very young, elderly, disabled or chronically ill) to ensure their health during times of extreme heat.
  • At first sign of heat illness (see below), move to a cooler place, rest for a few minutes, and slowly drink a cool beverage. Seek medical attention if you don't feel better in an hour or two.
